China puts guardrails on AI companions over social stability concerns

Share

China has imposed strict rules on AI companion app developers, which took effect on July 15, 2026. Platforms must inform users they are talking to an AI, send reminders every two hours, and take measures against emotional dependency. Minors under 18 are banned from virtual intimate relationships with AI, and children under 14 require parental consent. Major Chinese tech companies, including ByteDance, Alibaba, and Tencent, have already preemptively disabled these features. Serious violations can result in fines of up to 200,000 yuan, approximately 22,000 pounds sterling.
