The Zano attacker exploited a Gateway Address vulnerability to create 36.9 million ZANO and fUSD tokens in two separate transactions on Aug. 29 and Sept. 25. These unauthorized coins functioned as authentic ZANO and could be spent normally, making it impossible to remove them without a blockchain rollback. The team decided to roll back approximately one month of blockchain history to eliminate the unauthorized supply, acknowledging this would hurt trust. Recovery of affected balances is underway using the developer fund, team members’ personal funds and committed contributions.
