Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada will impose matching tariffs on approximately 700 American products, in response to the 50% duties the United States applied to roughly $20 billion worth of Canadian exports. The US tariffs took effect on August 22, 2026, while Canada’s retaliatory measures are set to begin on September 8, giving businesses on both sides of the border a narrow window to prepare. Canada will double its existing duties on US steel and aluminum imports to 50%. Trade negotiations between Ottawa and Washington collapsed on August 21-22, and Donald Trump has threatened to impose an additional 50% tariff on Canadian automobiles effective January 1, 2027.
