Sanxingdui: Future Past, the first fully AI-generated feature film to reach Chinese cinemas, grossed about 1.21 million yuan, or nearly $181,000, between October 23 and October 26-27, according to Maoyan. With a production budget exceeding 10 million yuan, the film generated revenues far below its costs. It nevertheless had more than 10,000 screenings on its opening day, but attendance averaged only two viewers per screening and occupancy rates fell to 0.1%. Bona Film Group worked on the project for more than two years with nearly 100 employees, generating more than 1.2 million images using AI tools, and obtained the first public screening permit granted in China to a fully AI-generated film. This commercial failure contrasts with the success of short-form AI content in China, while AI-related activities account for only 0.42% of the group’s revenue and the company’s share price reportedly fell after the film’s release.
