Bitcoin’s next difficulty rise could leave some rigs earning less than their power bill

Bitcoin’s difficulty is projected to rise 5.68% around October 16, based on the October 14 snapshot, bringing hashprice from $39.77 to approximately $37.63 per PH per day, a 5.37% revenue reduction for miners. For equipment consuming 20 J/TH at 8 cents per kWh, the $1.37 daily per PH/s cushion recorded at October 14 hashprice would turn into an approximately $0.77 shortfall after the retarget. Miners running 25 J/TH machines at 6.5 cents per kWh, or 30 J/TH at 5.5 cents per kWh, would also cross this threshold. The final adjustment will be confirmed at block 971,712, and Bitcoin’s price or fee movements will determine whether the pressure eases or deepens.
