Bitcoin: A $245 Million Home-Jacking Foiled

Three Missouri residents were indicted in the United States for planning to break into a Connecticut home to force a family’s son to return stolen bitcoins. The young man was suspected of involvement in stealing 4,100 BTC, worth approximately $245 million, from an investor in August 2024. After two days of surveillance, the trio abandoned the plan due to fear of security cameras, but a second team from Florida took over and attempted to kidnap the parents on August 25. The three accused face up to twenty years in prison for conspiracy to commit robbery affecting commerce. The case illustrates the phenomenon of wrench attacks, where criminals physically target cryptocurrency holders when hacking fails.
