Australia’s securities regulator ASIC has proposed tougher rules for crypto exchanges, including capital requirements that could reach A$14 million under one model. These proposals, released on Oct. 15, implement the Corporations Amendment (Digital Assets Framework) Act 2026, which establishes a mandatory licensing regime taking effect in 2027. ASIC is consulting on three capital models, with the most demanding requiring net tangible assets of at least A$14 million or 10% of average revenue for operators not using third-party custody. Over 140 applications for digital asset-related financial services have been recorded, including more than 110 submitted during a transitional period that ended in September. Industry feedback is due by Nov. 27, with final guidance expected in March 2027.
