Aptos has adopted Block-STM v2 as its default execution engine on its Layer 1 blockchain. This parallel execution system processes transactions simultaneously and only re-executes those that conflict, with no changes required from users or developers. Version 1 had reached approximately 170,000 transactions per second in benchmark tests conducted in 2022. Version 2 optimizes multi-core scalability up to 256 cores, targeting better handling of high-frequency DeFi workloads. Other blockchains, including certain implementations of the Cosmos SDK, have adopted variants of the original Block-STM approach.
