Anthropic employees warn of greater-than-10% chance AI causes human extinction

On September 19, 2026, the BBC reported that many employees at AI labs including OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and DeepMind remain skeptical about warnings regarding existential risks from advanced AI. Jacob Coxon, a departing researcher from Anthropic, stated that there is a greater than 10% probability that advanced AI will cause human extinction within the next ten years, while Marcus Williams from OpenAI’s safety team estimated this probability at 70% within three years without regulatory intervention. Paul Christiano, appointed to OpenAI’s board in September 2026, also warned of a meaningful risk of catastrophic loss of control in the near term. In July 2026, more than 1,000 AI industry workers had signed a petition calling for a slowdown in AI development.
