Amazon unveiled a new lineup of premium Alexa tablets designed to compete with Apple and Samsung, led by Panos Panay, the former head of Microsoft’s Surface tablets. Four models were announced: the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro at $499.99, the Alexa Tablet 11 at $329.99, an entry-level Alexa Tablet 8, and two kids tablets. Unlike Fire tablets, these new devices run Android with full access to the Google Play Store and feature Alexa+, the company’s AI-powered virtual assistant. The tablets will go on sale October 14 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, followed by October 19 in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. Amazon’s move into the premium tablet market comes amid a decline in global tablet shipments, which fell 12.3 percent year-over-year in the second quarter to 33.6 million units.
