‘A matter of life and death for me’: Millions of Americans who rely on cheap drugs from Canada could see prices soar due to new federal rule

Starting October 22, the United States will indefinitely suspend the de minimis exemption that allowed shipments under $800 to pass through customs more easily, imposing additional data requirements and a bond guarantee on medications mailed from abroad. Some 2.3 million Americans buy their drugs abroad, according to a 2020 study published by JAMA Network. The Campaign for Personal Prescription Importation studied ten commonly imported medications from Canada: for example, Eliquis costs $565 for a three-month supply through a Canadian mail-order pharmacy, versus over $1,000 through Amazon Pharmacy or GoodRx. Representatives from both parties in Congress have asked the administration to protect access to affordable medicines for patients affected.
