AI Agents Are Racing to Make Quantum-Safe Bitcoin Cheap—And Winning

The estimated cost of building a quantum-safe Bitcoin transaction dropped from about $320 to roughly $67 in one week, according to StarkWare. This nearly 80% decrease came from an open competition that produced 62 improvements, with the leading results achieved by developers running AI models including Anthropic’s Opus 5 and OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra. One core benchmark jumped from 146 million to over 820 million verified candidates per second on a standard RTX 4090. StarkWare cautions that the $67 figure is an estimate under stated hardware assumptions, not a market price, and that the work does not make Bitcoin quantum-safe on its own, with a soft fork remaining the better long-term solution. Amid growing concerns over Q-Day, firms including Coinbase are already drafting post-quantum custody playbooks.
