Over 70 cases of kidnappings and sequestrations targeting cryptocurrency holders have been recorded in France over the first eight months of the year, averaging three attacks per week. The number of victims has surged by nearly 300% compared to 2023, which already had 67 cases versus just 18 in 2022. These attacks now rank third among kidnappings and sequestrations in France, accounting for 15% of cases, behind drug trafficking (45%) and extortion (23%). The average ransom demanded by criminals stands at approximately 350,000 euros, explaining their motivation. Perpetrators are primarily individuals under 25, recruited through social media, while masterminds are often experienced criminals operating from abroad or from prison.
