President Trump has made approximately 28,700 stock trades in 17 months since returning to the White House, roughly 80 transactions per market day, surpassing the combined trading volume of the entire Congress. His portfolio exceeds $337 million in municipal and corporate bonds, with total transactions estimated between $600 million and $1.86 billion in 2025. Richard Painter, former White House ethics lawyer under George W. Bush, calls this situation « a huge problem » and warns about conflicts of interest, citing energy stock purchases after the Iran war began and Cal-Maine trades during the egg shortage. Unlike other executive branch officials, the president is not subject to 18 U.S.C. 208, which bars officials from participating in government matters affecting their own holdings.
