Since October 1, the stock has climbed 14% while the S&P 500 has fallen about 4%, mirroring periods of major market upheaval. Berkshire’s investment gains, however, plunged 46% year over year to $9.4 billion in the third quarter. The company invested $2.4 billion in stocks and sold about $2.8 billion, while also repurchasing $9.6 billion of its own shares during the quarter and roughly $2 billion more in the first four weeks of the fourth quarter.
