The South Korean government has proposed delaying the implementation of cryptocurrency gains tax from January 2027 to January 2029. The postponement still requires approval from the National Assembly and is intended to improve tax reporting infrastructure, investor protections and digital asset regulation. Under the current framework, annual cryptocurrency gains above 2.5 million won would face a combined tax rate of 22%, while the government is considering a three-year mechanism for carrying forward investment losses. South Korea is also preparing to exchange cryptocurrency tax information with the United States starting in 2029 as it gradually integrates digital assets into its financial system. For Bitcoin investors, the additional time could ease tax uncertainty, although it does not guarantee higher prices or permanently remove future taxation.
