The South Korean government is proposing a two-year postponement, to 2029, of a 22% tax on annual cryptocurrency gains exceeding 2.5 million won. It would be the fourth delay after successive postponements from an initial January 2022 launch date. The government cited the planned start of information exchanges with the United States under the Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework, warning that an earlier tax could disadvantage the domestic market. Authorities also plan to allow losses to be carried forward for three years, publish detailed tax guidelines in the first half of 2028 and submit amendments to parliament in 2027.
