Musk says Grok Bot usage limits were cut because costs ran too high

Elon Musk explained that xAI reduced Grok Bot usage limits because the cost of operating the service had become unsustainable relative to the revenue it generated. Subscribers reported reaching their weekly caps four or more days before the scheduled reset, prompting widespread criticism. xAI attributed part of the problem to a billing dashboard error while acknowledging changes to how usage was allocated. Launched in beta in August 2026, Grok Bot has more than 800,000 weekly paid users and over 600,000 daily active users. Subscriptions range from $30 to $200 per month, while SpaceX’s Super Intelligence division reportedly generated $431 million in profit as of November 2026.
