Brazilian platform Mercado Bitcoin suspended deposits and withdrawals after a security incident that drained more than $46 million in cryptocurrencies from its wallets. According to Certik senior security engineer Dickson Wu, the attackers used ordinary transfers across eight chains, including Base, Optimism and Arbitrum, before reaching the platform’s main wallets. Funds continued moving for several hours after the suspension was announced, including through small ether transfers from 27,160 addresses. Tether and Circle froze approximately $6.2 million of stolen funds, while about $20 million was transferred to newly created wallets and more than $20 million remained in identified addresses, including all 106 BTC. The platform says customers suffered no losses and no data was leaked, but the investigation into who carried out the attack is ongoing.
