Elon Musk expects tough debt markets to force consolidation among the more than 200 AI-focused cloud providers operating today, leaving only a few independent operators. The five largest publicly listed néoclouds carry combined debt of $61 billion, four times higher year over year, along with $18 billion in operating leases as of September 2026. CoreWeave, the largest provider, has between $35 billion and $52 billion in reported debt, negative GAAP earnings, sharply higher unsecured bond yields and a stock decline of more than 15%. Gartner projects that more than 80% of providers will cease operating independently by 2030, while projected industry spending of $7 trillion from 2026 to 2030 substantially exceeds projected revenue of $3.6 billion. Musk believes providers without significant revenue outside AI data centers will be the most exposed to refinancing pressures and potential failures.
