Coherence Neuro is testing a coin-sized SOMA implant designed to capture electrical signals produced by brain tumors and deliver targeted stimulation. The temporary device was tested in three patients at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in June 2026, with safety as the initial objective, while the company targets its first chronic human implants in 2027. Coherence closed a $10 million seed round in November 2025 led by Artesian and Topology Ventures, with Blackbird among the investors. OpenAI has not invested in Coherence; its confirmed neurotech investment is in Merge Labs, the brain-computer interface company co-founded by Sam Altman, which raised a $252 million seed round. As brain-computer interfaces move into clinical use, the storage, sharing and potential use of neural data to train AI models will become increasingly important.
