Germany’s Sparkassen, the country’s network of independent public savings banks, is now offering cryptocurrency trading to retail clients inside its banking app. The service, run by DekaBank, lets customers buy and sell five assets, but rollout is decided bank by bank and crypto holdings carry far fewer protections than ordinary deposits.
๐ Key takeaways
- Five assets available: Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana and Polygon (POL).
- Fees of 0.99 euro per order, no minimum amount and a 250,000-euro cap per transaction.
- Bank-by-bank rollout: 5 institutions listed as of 20 October 2026, with 30 to 40 monthly additions targeted by the DSGV.
- Withdrawals restricted to approved providers, and no deposit guarantee for crypto assets.
A Staggered Rollout, Bank by Bank
The launch on 19 October 2026 was not a simultaneous switch-on. Each independent Sparkasse decides on its own whether to add the service to its app. The network counts roughly 350 institutions, yet as of 20 October only five appeared on DekaBank’s list: Frankfurter Sparkasse, Sparkasse Rottal-Inn, Niederrheinische Sparkasse RheinLippe, Taunus Sparkasse and Sparkasse Karlsruhe.

The DSGV, the German savings bank association, expects 30 to 40 institutions to join each month and wants a large share of interested banks connected during the first half of 2027. According to BeInCrypto, more than 230 savings banks have already expressed interest.
“Each Sparkasse decides for itself when it starts.”
Joachim Schmalzl, Board Member, DSGV
Speaking to the dpa news agency, Schmalzl also said that “interest within the group is high.” The table below summarises the key figures published so far.
| Indicator | Figure |
|---|---|
| Independent savings banks | about 350 |
| Clients served by the Sparkassen | about 50 million |
| Institutions listed as of 20 October 2026 | 5 |
| Institutions interested (BeInCrypto) | more than 230 |
| Target pace set by the DSGV | 30 to 40 per month |
Access requires a current account at a participating savings bank. Clients then open a DekaBank crypto account from the “Anlegen” investment section of the Sparkasse app. Authorisations go through the bank’s standard online security steps, including push TAN confirmation. The crypto portfolio then appears alongside the client’s other accounts.
Fixed-Price Orders and a Simple Fee Schedule
Trades do not run through an order book. DekaBank offers a fixed price, guaranteed for a limited time, which the client accepts in the app. That price combines a DekaBank margin with a market reference price. The margin is not disclosed in the fee schedule, so order fees alone do not reveal the total cost of a trade.
| Item | Retail terms |
|---|---|
| Fee per buy or sell | 0.99 euro |
| Minimum amount | None |
| Cap per transaction | 250,000 euros |
| Asset custody | Free |
| Permitted outgoing transfers | Free |
| Bitcoin delivery threshold | 0.0001 BTC |
Trading is not limited to fixed hours. However, unusual market conditions, technical incidents and maintenance windows can prevent a client from buying or selling at the desired time or price. Customer service is available Monday to Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Friday until 5 p.m.
Execution-only, no advice
The offer includes no investment advice and no personalised recommendation. According to DekaBank, it is reserved for “self-directed investors” and the bank does not check whether a purchase suits the client’s financial situation. The DSGV says it does not plan active large-scale promotion and still describes cryptocurrencies as “highly speculative investments” carrying a risk of total loss.
Centralised Custody and Restricted Withdrawals
Custody is fully centralised. DekaBank holds client crypto in a common omnibus wallet and keeps the private keys on clients’ behalf. Holdings are pooled, while individual entitlements are determined by the bank’s internal records. The crypto holding is not comparable to a bank deposit.
Withdrawals are not open-ended. They can only be sent to expressly authorised crypto-asset service providers (CASPs). The documentation excludes transfers to any other address, including self-custodied wallets such as Ledger or Trezor devices. The list published in October names Crypto Finance Deutschland GmbH, Tangany GmbH, Bรถrse Stuttgart Digital Custody GmbH and Bullish Europe GmbH. DekaBank says the restriction limits beneficiary verification obligations linked to transfers, particularly for self-hosted addresses.
DekaBank describes itself as a MiCA-notified crypto-asset service provider: a bank that extended its existing licence to crypto activity without a separate authorisation. Custody is said to be provided with Bรถrse Stuttgart. The key point is that crypto assets are outside the statutory deposit guarantee system, so the 100,000-euro guarantee that applies to bank deposits does not cover them.
- Counterparty risk: custody depends on the bank and its partners.
- Operational risk: maintenance windows, incidents and time-limited fixed prices.
- Total loss risk: no bank-deposit-style protection.
Wider Bank Acceptance, Mixed Trust
The launch comes as German banks become more willing to offer crypto. Cooperative banks, which rejected the asset class four years earlier, have moved too: DZ Bank’s meinKrypto platform now runs inside the VR Banking app and offers Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin and Cardano. BaFin authorised meinKrypto under MiCA at the end of December 2025, with Bรถrse Stuttgart Digital providing custody. Each of the roughly 650 cooperative banks, like each Sparkasse, chooses individually whether to join.
A survey by Bรถrse Stuttgart Digital found that 38% of Germans trust their main bank more than specialised crypto platforms, versus 19%. About a quarter of respondents nonetheless have already invested in cryptocurrencies.
“It is worrying that savings banks and cooperative banks are now opening the floodgates to the cryptocurrency market.”
Co-Pierre Georg, Professor, Frankfurt School of Finance & Management
Georg argues that traditional bank clients may not appreciate the risks, a concern that echoes the DSGV’s own warning about the highly speculative nature of the asset.
Tax and Market Context
The tax treatment depends on each investor’s personal situation and may change, including retroactively. According to DekaBank’s explanation, private gains on crypto disposals benefit from an annual exemption of 1,000 euros under the current framework. This threshold is not a partial deduction: according to Cryptoticker, exceeding it would make the entire gain taxable. Unlike securities, crypto gains carry no withholding tax, and DekaBank does not issue the tax certificate it provides for securities, so reporting remains tied to the taxpayer’s income tax return.
Bitcoin prices cited in the sources are not directly comparable because their publication dates differ. CoinMarketCap placed Bitcoin near $81,870, up about 1% over 24 hours at the time of writing. Bloomberg, relayed by Yahoo Finance, cited a price near $62,483, roughly 50% below the October 2025 record of $126,080. The sources report no measurable reaction in DekaBank’s shares or in any other instrument tied to the launch.
Outlook: Gradual Adoption, Scenarios to Watch
The Sparkassen’s entry marks a shift in posture for the German banking sector, but its scale will depend on how quickly savings banks sign up. Three scenarios merit monitoring: a ramp-up in line with the 30 to 40 monthly additions targeted by the DSGV; an expansion of the asset list or of the approved provider network; and a market shock or technical incident that would test the reliability of guaranteed prices and service availability.
For savers, the central question is not only access to trading but a clear understanding of its constraints: execution-only service, centralised custody, restricted withdrawals, no deposit guarantee and crypto-specific tax rules. With the rollout spread over several quarters, these conditions can be tracked savings bank by savings bank.
