Google Quantum AI cut a critical class of quantum errors roughly 40-fold on its Willow chip, per a paper published in Science. The chip reaches 99.99% fidelity, but this remains a million times short of what’s needed to break RSA-2048 encryption or Bitcoin’s elliptic curve cryptography. The crypto ecosystem is actively preparing for this threat: Coinbase, Sui, Ethereum, Zcash, and Near are all working on quantum-resistant solutions. Justin Drake advised major holders to move funds to fresh addresses that have never signed a transaction to avoid exposing their public keys. This breakthrough serves as a reminder that the quantum threat is advancing, even if it poses no immediate danger to crypto.
