Apple and Meta announced Thursday a collaboration enabling developers to run Meta’s open-weight AI model Muse Spark Open on Apple’s Mac Studio computers. The model, which has 816 billion parameters using a mixture-of-experts architecture, can run locally rather than in the cloud, providing enhanced security and cost savings for users. Customers can pair between two and four Mac Studios for coding, video analysis, or other agentic work. A Mac Studio with the M5 Ultra chip and 256GB of memory costs at least $10,799. This partnership marks a significant shift in the companies’ relationship, as they had previously clashed after Apple’s 2021 privacy changes, which Meta estimated would cut its revenue by $10 billion.
