A 35-year-old engineer, Abdulrahman Alfozan, has been charged with planting a thumb-sized audio recording device in OpenAI’s San Francisco office. The device, hidden inside toilet paper and plugged into a television’s USB port, was discovered on September 30, 2026 during a routine security sweep. He had booked a one-way flight to Saudi Arabia for October 12 and was arrested on October 9, before he could leave. OpenAI, which fired the engineer who joined in July 2025, says no sensitive data was accessed. US authorities are treating this as a national security matter, with the FBI investigation ongoing.
