Coinbase calls on the Bitcoin community to start a phased post-quantum migration now. The platform, which controls about 5% of Bitcoin supply through its custody arm, warns that consensus changes and ecosystem migrations can take years. Google researchers believe a quantum computer capable of breaking current cryptography could be feasible by 2029. Approximately 3.5 million BTC, or 17% of the supply, are inaccessible, and Glassnode estimates that 21.5% of the total supply is exposed to quantum risk due to address reuse. Coinbase has proposed implementing post-quantum signature systems and plans to launch a quantum-safe custody system next year.
