Microsoft is setting up a new group called Xbox Labs to study the rise of AI-assisted game mods. The group comes as modders use decompilation and recompilation techniques to port and merge classic games, such as integrating Skate into Call of Duty or making Halo playable in a web browser. The company has already developed several AI gaming tools, including Muse, a generative model announced in February 2025, and XCP, an open-source framework launched in October 2026 enabling AI agents to build prototypes on Xbox hardware. Microsoft also filed a patent in March 2026 for cloud-based AI assistance during gaming sessions and maintains a partnership with Inworld AI since 2023 for in-game characters and dialogue. Xbox Labs is described as a group designed to explore this phenomenon, not one tasked with shipping a specific service.
