The FBI arrested 35-year-old OpenAI engineer Abdulrahman Alfozan on October 9 for allegedly concealing an encrypted audio recorder behind a television in an executive conference room at the company’s San Francisco headquarters. Prosecutors allege that a chatbot account linked to his wife had inquired how to build and conceal a continuous audio recorder with Wi-Fi connectivity just days before the device was installed. The company stated that its own AI models helped identify him and noted no evidence of exfiltration of model weights, source code, or customer data. Alfozan, charged with allegedly intercepting oral communications, faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.
