French bonds are experiencing their worst decade since the one that included the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution. France’s budget deficit is expected to reach 5.4% of gross domestic product this year, significantly higher than any other European Union member state and above the bloc’s 3% limit. The country has not achieved a balanced budget since 1974. With an aging population, pressures on the public finances of the European Union’s second-biggest economy are set to intensify.
