Oil prices are jumping again. How the S&P 500 has performed on days crude has seen big gains may be surprising.

Oil prices surged sharply on Thursday, with the lead Brent crude contract up about 4% to $104.14 per barrel and the West Texas Intermediate contract rising by a similar percentage to $91.84. This rally was triggered by a tanker strike north of Qatar and reports that the Trump administration was considering resuming hostilities against Iran ahead of the November midterm elections.
