IMF says tokenized repos average $300 billion to $350 billion a day

The IMF revealed in its Global Financial Stability Report released on October 8, 2026 that tokenized repurchase agreements now average between $300 billion and $350 billion in daily volume. The Canton Network processed approximately $350 billion in daily repo volumes while Broadridge’s Distributed Ledger Repo platform reached $365 billion in July 2026, totaling $8 trillion for the month. These figures remain modest compared to the traditional US repo market, which had $4.6 trillion outstanding as of January 2026 and daily activity of approximately $13 trillion. The IMF praises efficiency gains from tokenization, including atomic settlement and 24/7 operations, but warns of liquidity strains, leverage through collateral reuse, and systemic contagion risks. The institution recommends a technology-neutral regulatory framework that governs assets based on their function rather than their technical infrastructure.
