Fitch says power, not chips, will decide Taiwan’s AI data centre growth

Fitch Ratings indicates that power availability, not chip production, will determine the growth of AI data centers in Taiwan. As of November 2025, 79 power applications for AI data centers totaling approximately 4,758 MW had been filed, but only 40 of them, covering about 3,033 MW, had been approved. Northern Taiwan has had a freeze on new applications since 2024 due to grid constraints, particularly around Taoyuan. Taiwan’s sovereign rating was affirmed at ‘AA’ with a Stable outlook, and Fitch warns about risks tied to the country’s high dependence on imported energy.
