Bitcoin Mining vs AI: Gen Z No Longer Believes Tech Billionaires on Climate

A column published by Forbes describes a growing gap between baby boomers, who still believe in the state’s ability to solve the climate crisis, and Gen Z, which no longer trusts tech billionaires’ environmental promises. The Bitcoin network consumes 138 TWh per year with 52.4% decarbonized energy, while the International Energy Agency projects AI-related data centers will reach 950 TWh by 2030. More than six in ten young people report climate anxiety and 70% of 18-34 year olds surveyed by CNBC/Generation Lab in August 2026 express distrust toward Sam Altman, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Jensen Huang. Paradoxically, Riot Platforms has signed a $9.1 billion hosting contract with Anthropic, one of those AI laboratories that this generation distrusts so much.
