zkAPI, a billing system for metered APIs co-developed by Davide Crapis and Vitalik Buterin with the Ethereum Foundation and Open Anonymity, is now live on Ethereum mainnet as of October 1st. The system offers two withdrawal routes: mutual close requiring server clearance, and escape withdrawal enabling exits without server authorization but subject to a 24-hour challenge period. Vault owners can pause deposits and new escape initiations, while active notes expired after 30 days have their full recorded deposit sent to the treasury. The mainnet vault holds ETH instead of the USDC announced, and the implementation uses a Groth16 circuit with single-party key generation, remaining experimental and unaudited for production use.
