A report by the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) analyzes 238 billion dollars in World Bank aid disbursed to 94 developing countries between 2018 and 2024. Researchers found that the volume of anonymous transactions on exchange platforms located in tax havens surged by approximately 137% in the month when aid arrived. From a sample of 78 billion dollars, between 1.7 and 4.4 billion dollars would have been diverted to Bitcoin. Four sectors appear particularly affected: transport, water and sanitation, social protection, and governance. The authors acknowledge that the study only covers Bitcoin and cannot identify the actors behind anonymous wallets.
