Bitcoin, Chivo and Stablecoins: El Salvador’s New Deal with the IMF

The IMF has disbursed approximately $138 million to El Salvador, granting a waiver for breaching the criterion on bitcoin accumulation. Recent additions have been classified as private donations, with the country committing to no further public BTC purchases. The state must gradually divest its residual exposure in Chivo, whose majority control has already been transferred to a private operator. Meanwhile, El Salvador is developing Sivar, a US dollar stablecoin application on Coinbase’s Base network, for diaspora remittance services. Economic growth is projected at 4.5% in 2026, with international reserves expected to reach $5.35 billion.
