A research team from Carnegie Mellon, MIT, New York University, and Stanford developed Ataraxos, an artificial intelligence specialized in the game of Stratego. In July 2025, Ataraxos faced Pim Niemeijer, widely regarded as the greatest Stratego player ever, and defeated him with a score of 15 wins, 1 loss, and 4 draws out of 20 games, representing an 85 percent win rate. The system also achieved a 95 percent win rate during live exhibition matches against attendees at a Stratego championship in August 2025. The training cost less than 8,000 dollars using 16 Nvidia H100 GPUs for approximately one week, a striking contrast to the millions required for DeepMind’s DeepNash project.
