Three tankers linked to Iran carrying a total of nearly 6 million barrels of crude oil valued at approximately $600 million are currently crossing the Atlantic toward the United States after being seized by U.S. naval forces in the Indian Ocean. These very large crude carriers, the Tifani, the Majestic X, and the Lenore (also known as the Davina), were intercepted under the naval blockade imposed by President Donald Trump in April, which was reinstated after a brief summer ceasefire. The legal procedure being used to confiscate these vessels is prize law, an ancient body of maritime law dating back to the Middle Ages and codified in the U.S. Constitution. If the tankers reach their destination, they will likely dock along the Texas coast, where U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Texas Aaron Reitz stated his office is ready to represent the United States in adjudicating these prizes.
