OpenAI’s GPT-6 Breaks an Undeciphered German Code from 1918

Share

OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra model has deciphered a German telegram sent on November 27, 1918, encrypted with the ADFGVX cipher system, which had resisted cryptanalysts for 108 years. The message reveals the arrival of the cruiser HMS Canterbury at Sevastopol on November 24, 1918, and that of an Allied squadron on the 26th, information confirmed by Royal Navy logbooks. The encryption key used, TRUPPENVERSCHIEBUNG, was not supposed to come into service until December 9, 1918, twelve days after the message was sent, which explains the failure of previous attempts. This breakthrough illustrates the ability of language models to exploit statistical language structures to break manual ciphers, a terrain radically different from Bitcoin’s asymmetric cryptography. The authors of the 2017 challenge have not yet publicly validated this solution.
