The University of Oxford has entered a five-year partnership with OpenAI, allowing the company to train its AI models on historical texts held in the Bodleian Libraries. The pilot project, launched in February 2025, focuses on digitizing approximately 3,500 public-domain dissertations dating from 1498 to 1884. This partnership falls under OpenAI’s NextGenAI program, which has committed 50 million dollars in research grants and computing resources to several elite institutions, including Harvard and MIT. Oxford plans to deploy ChatGPT Edu starting in September 2025, with about 750 users having already piloted the tool. Oxford staff have raised concerns about reputational risks associated with partnering with a company that has faced sustained criticism over copyright issues and data sourcing practices.
