A Columbia Business School report estimates that the United States will need to invest approximately $10.3 trillion in artificial intelligence infrastructure between 2025 and 2032. To make this investment profitable, the AI sector will need to generate approximately $3.7 trillion in annual revenue by 2032, representing nearly 9.2% of projected US GDP for that year. The study, conducted by professor Stijn Van Nieuwerburgh, projects the construction of 182.7 gigawatts of data center capacity and requires approximately 80% compounded annual revenue growth, starting from a current combined revenue run-rate of approximately $100 billion for OpenAI and Anthropic. The report also warns about systemic risks related to external debt financing and power generation and grid capacity constraints.
