China’s chip equipment imports jumped 16% in August 2024, marking a sharp rebound after a challenging first half when Q1 imports fell 16% and Q2 dropped 1%. Overall Chinese imports rose 28.2% year-over-year in August, with semiconductor imports specifically surging 83.6%. China accounted for approximately 36% of global wafer fabrication equipment spending in 2024-2025 and imported 49.2 billion dollars of semiconductor manufacturing equipment in 2024, surpassing the combined imports of Taiwan and South Korea. Barclays projects China’s wafer fabrication equipment spending will grow 10% in 2026 and accelerate to 15% in 2027.
