ECB launches wholesale digital euro with Pontes

Share

The European Central Bank has officially launched Pontes, a wholesale digital euro infrastructure reserved for banks and financial institutions. This system enables the settlement of transactions involving tokenized assets directly in central bank money, using distributed ledger technologies such as blockchain. Several banks and market operators have already completed their technical integration and can begin using this infrastructure. The ECB itself plans to invest part of its own funds in tokenized securities denominated in euros through Pontes. Full implementation of the system is scheduled for 2028.
