The European Commission presented the EU Kids Act on September 17, 2026, banning access to social media for users under 13 and requiring supervised mini-accounts for 13 to 15-year-olds. Under-15s will not be allowed to have personal accounts on these platforms. Age verification will rely on zero-knowledge proofs and the European digital identity wallet, enabling age confirmation without exposing personal data. This legislation, still subject to the ordinary legislative procedure, follows Australia’s lead in banning social media for under-16s since December 10, 2025, with fines of up to 49.5 million Australian dollars.
