The European Central Bank launched on September 15, 2026 a call for interest aimed at e-commerce and m-commerce merchants operating in the euro area to join the digital euro pilot planned for the second half of 2027. Applications must be submitted by October 27, 2026, and participation is voluntary and unpaid. The pilot will bring together 36 selected payment service providers, including Deutsche Bank, UniCredit, BPCE, Revolut and Stripe. A first issuance of the digital euro is envisioned for 2029, contingent on the adoption of the European regulation expected by end of 2026. This initiative comes as euro-denominated stablecoins regulated under MiCA now exceed 880 million dollars in total supply, dominated by Circle’s EURC with 61.1% market share.
