US Treasury sanctions 27 Iranian airlines in sweeping ‘Operation Economic Outcast’

On September 8, the Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioned 27 Iranian airlines and nine third-country entities in what it calls Operation Economic Outcast. The action targets all remaining active Iranian carriers, citing their role in transporting weapons and personnel for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Three aviation authorizations were suspended, affecting overflight permissions and operations involving US-origin aircraft into Iran. The investigation identified at least three Boeing 777s procured for Mahan Air through facilitators based in the UAE, Turkey, and Malaysia. Companies in those jurisdictions now face the prospect of secondary sanctions, which could cut them off from the US financial system.
