Google DeepMind and Google Research announced on September 3, 2026 WeatherNext 3, the first global weather model to generate forecasts every hour using real-time geostationary satellite data. The model achieves precipitation forecast accuracy up to 50 percent higher than previous models for lead times of one day or more, with spatial resolution reaching 5 km for calibrated surface variables. WeatherNext 3 produces 64-member ensemble forecasts covering a 15-day horizon for select cycles and a 48-hour window for hourly interim runs. The model has been ranked as the most advanced and accurate globally by Brightband’s independent evaluation framework Operational WeatherBench.
