Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels announced the country’s broadest moratorium on generative AI in public schools, covering nearly 600,000 students from 2-K through eighth grade, or two-thirds of enrollment, starting in the 2026-27 school year. All student-facing generative AI software and companion chatbots are prohibited at every grade level, including high school. Up to 50,000 high school students, roughly 5% of the system, will use vetted tools in a maximum of five classes per school, including Quill for English, Edia for math coaching, and Intel AI-Ready Schools for semester-long projects. Every high schooler will complete two 45-minute AI literacy modules per year, and a new coalition will assess the pilots before issuing recommendations for future years.
