OpenAI announced on September 1, 2026 an integration with Epic Systems, granting authorized clinicians read-only access to patient records within ChatGPT for Healthcare. The architecture works bidirectionally: clinicians can pull medical histories, lab results, and medications from Epic into ChatGPT, while ChatGPT can also be embedded directly within Epic’s own EHR interface. Access is strictly read-only, with no ability to write to patient records or place orders, and HIPAA compliance has been confirmed. A companion Healthcare Public Data plugin provides access to nine official sources including PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov.
