Meta dismantled a fake account network attributed to an Iranian operation that used artificial intelligence to create fictional American personas on Facebook and Instagram. The network consisted of 294 Instagram accounts, 8 Facebook accounts, and 2 Pages, collectively amassing approximately 41,000 followers. The AI-generated personas included profiles of political scientists and women’s rights activists, complete with elaborate backstories designed to appear authentic. The campaign spent zero dollars on advertising and relied entirely on organic reach. It primarily targeted English-speaking users in the United States and secondarily Arabic-speaking users in Iraq.
